Get StartedQuestions about this tool
Can I receive both SBP and DIC at the same time?
Yes. The SBP-DIC offset, known as the widow's tax, was permanently eliminated as of January 1, 2023. Surviving spouses now receive both their full SBP payment and their full DIC payment simultaneously. If your SBP is still being reduced, contact DFAS at 800-321-1080.
Does remarrying affect my DIC benefits?
It depends on when you remarried. If you remarried before age 55, your DIC eligibility is suspended. If you remarried at age 55 or older, your DIC is not affected. If a previous marriage that affected your DIC has since ended by death or divorce, your DIC eligibility may be restored.
What is CHAMPVA and how is it different from TRICARE?
CHAMPVA is VA health care coverage for dependents of veterans with a 100% permanent and total disability rating or who died from a service-connected condition. TRICARE is military health care for active duty members, retirees, and their families. You generally cannot use both simultaneously. If you are eligible for TRICARE, you are typically not eligible for CHAMPVA.
