C&P Exam Prep Guide
A Compensation and Pension exam determines your VA disability rating. Most veterans go in unprepared and undersell their symptoms. This tool generates a personalized preparation worksheet so you know what to expect, what to say, and what not to say.
What you get
- A plain-English explanation of what a C&P exam is and what the examiner is actually looking for
- The most important principle: the exam measures your worst days, not your best
- Per-condition symptom documentation prompts covering frequency, severity, and functional impact on work, sleep, and daily life
- Specific questions the examiner is likely to ask for your listed conditions
- A printable symptom summary you can bring to the appointment and read from during the exam
Who this is for
Veterans scheduled for a C&P exam who want to prepare accurate symptom documentation and avoid the most common mistakes.
Common situations this tool handles
- You have a C&P exam scheduled for PTSD and a knee injury and are not sure what the examiner will ask or how to describe your symptoms.
- You had a previous C&P exam where you felt the examiner did not capture how bad your condition actually is.
- You are filing for a rating increase and want to make sure your worst days are documented accurately.
What your analysis looks like
Sample analysis for illustration. Your output will reflect your specific document and situation.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR C&P EXAM
A C&P exam is not a treatment appointment. The examiner is documenting your current level of impairment. Their report goes directly to the VA rater who assigns your disability percentage. The exam measures your worst days, not your average days. Many veterans are underrated because they minimize their symptoms out of habit.
WHAT NOT TO SAY
- Do not say I manage fine or I have good days and bad days without specifics
- Do not minimize: I can walk but it hurts is less useful than I cannot walk more than a block without stopping
- Do not thank the examiner in a way that signals you feel better than you do
YOUR SYMPTOM DOCUMENTATION WORKSHEET
For each condition on your exam order, answer these questions before the appointment: How often do you have symptoms? Include your worst weeks. How severe are symptoms on your worst days, on a scale of 1 to 10? How long do flare-ups last? How does the condition limit your work, sleep, relationships, and daily activities? Can I bring notes to a C&P exam?
Yes. You are allowed to bring written notes and read from them during the exam. This is one of the most effective ways to ensure your symptoms are documented accurately and completely.
What happens if the examiner does not ask about an important symptom?
Bring it up yourself. If the examiner does not ask about something important to your claim, you can say I also want to mention... before the exam ends. You are not limited to only answering what is asked.
How do I get a copy of the examiner's report after the exam?
You can request a copy of the C&P exam report from the VA once it is available in your claims file. Log into va.gov and check your Blue Button records, or request it from your regional office.
How it works
- Describe your situation. Enter your details in plain English. No document upload required for most VA tools. Your information is used only to generate your output and is never stored.
- We analyze it. Bill Advantage reviews your input against VA regulations, benefit rules, and current 2026 rates, reflecting the knowledge of VA billing and benefits professionals encoded into a system that works in minutes, not days.
- You get answers. Receive a plain-English explanation of exactly what applies to your situation. For most tools, a ready-to-send letter or worksheet is included. Set reminders for follow-up deadlines and build a complete record over time.
